  1. Great post! And no, I don’t think that you are being “pissy”. I see your point and agree with you. This is who I am inside. This is me. I can’t “turn it off”. I’m right there with you. I’m hoping that people grow to a better understanding of it.

    • I know that there’s going to be folks who feel poly, and those that choose poly, and those that are somewhere in-between. The how of it doesn’t really matter to me, because we all end up in the same place. I’d just like to think we can all take it seriously. And maybe I’m going to take it more seriously than most. But it’s good to know that I’m not the only one. 🙂

  2. I think it goes along the same lines of when people say they’re on a “diet”. Any way that you choose to eat, whether it be healthy, vegetarian, vegan, Atkins, or a fast food diet. It’s all a diet. It’s a way or a style of eating and it’s all your own. I actually am more turned off when they call it “alternative” because that makes it sound not normal when any way that you live and it makes you happy should be normal, not an alternative to normal.

    • Maybe I’m too Gen-X indoctrinated, but the “alternative” thing didn’t even register with me. But, yes, I think you’re right that it implies a kind of normalcy that I am “clearly” not working with.

  3. I completely agree! My intro to poly was similar to yours…I started dating a guy in an open marriage and realized…there’s a WORD for this? A whole community?! I never really liked calling it a lifestyle, but hadn’t given it that much thought. But it really is a continuation of the alternative monocentric, couple focused, hierarchical side of polyamory that is all too common.
